How Long Do Psilocybin Mushrooms Effects Last?

The effects of psilocybin mushrooms can be pleasant and relaxing while the physical effects can be uncomfortable if the individual ingests too much of the drug. But how long do psilocybin mushrooms effects last?

What are the Common Effects of Psilocybin?

Psilocybin mushrooms are a part of the hallucinogenic drug class which means that they cause hallucinations, mixed senses, nausea, and an increase in body temperature. However, they can also cause “feelings of relaxation (similar to effects of low doses of marijuana,” spiritual or introspective experiences, and nervousness, paranoia, and panic reactions (NIDA). Because of these effects, psilocybin can be compared to both hallucinogens and marijuana.

How Long Does It Take for Psilocybin Mushrooms to Take Effect?

There are many factors that can cause changes to the way psilocybin mushrooms affect an individual. For example, CESAR states that several factors “including the age, type, and dosage amount of mushrooms used, the setting the mushroom is used in, the use’s expectations, past drug experiences, and personality” will all affect what occurs. This is also true for the time it takes for the mushrooms to affect you.

Psilocybin mushrooms effects

The effects of Psilocybin mushrooms can vary in length depending on the person.

There are also several different methods of using the drug. It can be:

  • Ingested whole
  • Sprinkled onto food
  • Covered with a different food item like peanut butter or pizza
  • Brewed to make tea
  • Crushed into a powder and prepared as a capsule, solution, or tablet
  • Smoked
  • Injected

Because of these reasons, psilocybin mushrooms can take anywhere from “20 minutes to 2 hours to take effect.”

How Long Do the Effects Last?

From a single dose of psilocybin, a person can expect effects to last “for 3 to 6 hours.” There is a large variable time because of the many factors that play into the effects of the drug. In general though, the effects of psilocybin mushrooms last longer than the drugs which are often abused in a binge-crash pattern or abused constantly like crack and meth. Because the effects of these drugs often only last for about five minutes, users will abuse them over and over trying to prolong the high, which is not something that is normally done with psilocybin mushrooms.

Because the drug’s effects last for a long time and are numerous, someone may experience different psychological effects as time goes on. Some of the common psychological effects of psilocybin mushrooms include:

  • Feelings of unity with others and the environment
  • Spiritual experiences
  • Past experiences melding with the present
  • Detachment from the body
  • Problems focusing
  • Melding of the senses which is called synesthesia and causes one to feel that they are hearing colors or seeing music
  • Tension
  • Anxiety
  • Restlessness
  • Fear
  • Panic

At any given time, a pleasant experience or trip can turn into an unpleasant one. Someone who uses psilocybin mushrooms can never be sure what it will be like the first time they do, and there is no guarantee the effects will be the same the second time or that they will last the same amount of time.
